The 2024 U.S. presidential election promises to be like no other in modern times.

Leading the field of Republican presidential candidates is former President Donald Trump, who faces a battery of federal and state criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Biden, the incumbent president, is the presumptive Democratic nominee. At 81, he would be the oldest American to win a presidential election should he clinch a second four-year term in November 2024.

Before Americans pick a president in November, they get to pick the candidates in a series of primaries and caucuses.  It’s a wonky process that has evolved over the course of the country’s history and continues to evolve today. WASHINGTON (Reuters)

The Convention

Prior to a general election, there is a selection process to determine which candidate will appear on the ballot for a given political party in the nationwide general election. Political parties generally hold national conventions at which a group of delegates collectively decide upon which candidate they will run for the presidency. The two methods for choosing delegates to the national convention are the caucus and the primary.

The Caucus

What is a caucus? Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina – Candidates spend significant time and money on their campaigns in the early primary states. But these primaries and caucuses do not necessarily pick the party’s nominee or the president. How are votes cast at a caucus?  For Republicans, surrogates for candidates give final pitches after the caucuses get underway and then paper ballots are distributed to caucusgoers. They’re counted on-site, and the results are shared with the party. Since it isn’t a traditional election, a candidate’s performance in Iowa is often viewed as a test of his or her campaign’s organizational strength. Caucuses are not primaries. Primary elections are conducted like other US elections – at polling places and by secret ballot, held throughout the day and usually also with absentee and early voting.

The Primary

What is a primary? It’s an election to select candidates, usually for a particular political party, to appear on the general election ballot. Primaries award delegates, and candidates must reach a magic number of delegates to win the nomination and appear on the general election ballot in November. In some states a combination of the primary and caucus systems are used. The primary serves as a measure of public opinion but is not necessarily binding in choosing delegates. Sometimes the Party does not recognize open primaries because members of other parties are permitted to vote

Awarding the Delegates

The Democratic Party always uses a proportional method for awarding delegates. The percentage of delegates each candidate is awarded (or the number of undecided delegates) is representative of the mood of the caucus-goers or the number of primary votes for the candidate. For example imagine a state with ten delegates and three candidates. If 60% of the people supported candidate X, 20% supported candidate Y, and 20% supported candidate Z, candidate X would receive six delegates and candidates Y and Z would each receive two delegates.

The Republican Party, unlike the Democratic Party, allows each state to decide whether to use the winner-take-all method or the proportional method. In the winner-take-all method the candidate whom the majority of caucus participants or voters support receives all the delegates for the state. It is essential to remember that this is a general guide and that the primary system differs significantly from state to state. The best way to find information about your state is to contact your state Board of Elections. ………..Government 101: United States Presidential Primary – The Voter’s Self Defense System – Vote Smart

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. – Leo Buscaglia

The New Rules of Tipping

t is now almost impossible to make any sort of purchase without being confronted with a Square screen asking for 15, 20, or 25 percent. And not just for a coffee: Buying a water bottle at the deli or crackers at a specialty grocery store now sometimes also prompts the option. This might irritate or confuse you, but the reality is there are new social expectations around all kinds of etiquette but also about what deserves a tip.

Note: anything under 20 per cent is rude and that, if you have more disposable income, you should be tipping more.

One more surprising item on the list is the 10 per cent tip requirement when picking up a takeaway. This is because, even when picking up the food yourself instead of getting a delivery, the order will still ‘interrupt the flow of the other work’ from which staff could be collecting tips.  Daily Mail

Food is a Universal Human Right – Help us provide fresh meals to communities in Hawaiʻi

After an unusually dry year in Hawaiʻi, two bushfires, heavily fanned by Category 4 Hurricane Dora in the Pacific, grew rapidly overnight. On Maui, the fire devastated communities—tragically it has become the deadliest blaze in the United States in more than a century.
